Autumn approaches, and the last two races of the 2017 series. A forecast NW F3, dropping later. There were a couple of cruisers anchored near the Osea start line, so Race Officer Trevor Holder transferred it to the south of the channel, using Mayland Spit as the outer distance mark. This naturally led to a certain amount of pressure at the Committee Boat end, but all 17 boats got way without incident. A very shy spinnaker fetch in F3, and after Thirslet only ‘Crazy Suzy’ could hold her asymmetric up to West Mersea no. 3.
The cross tide leg from WM2 to WM1 in light wind split the fleet, and the leading group heading for the Knoll and the Wallet Spitway formed as ‘Geronimo’, ‘Crazy Suzy’, ‘Caroline’, and ‘Moonshadow’, followed by ‘Easi Rider’, ‘Blue Moon’, and ‘Triton’.
After the Spitway, a beat to the North Eagle, then Colne Bar and up the Colne to No. 8, where most of the fleet were caught by a squall from the north – fortunately lasting only about 10 minutes. The later boats did not experience this, being elsewhere at the time.
Tommy Mills’ ‘Geronimo’ was first back, in just under 7 hours, and most boats finished with some wind – and daylight – but from ‘Soprano’ on it was over 8 hours, very light wind, and dark, finishing under navigation lights. A long race!
An excellent win for ‘Crazy Suzy’, with the aid of some very experienced new crew members, but ‘Geronimo’ also sailed an exemplary race for second place, beating ‘Moonshadow’.
First – ‘Crazy Suzy’ – John Littlewood – Marconi SC
Second – ‘Geronimo’ – Tom Mills – MLSC
Third – ‘Moonshadow’ – Sue Sheppard and John Gibson
– Blackwater SC
First – ‘Blue Moon’ – Richard Robarts – Marconi SC
Second – ‘Triton’ – Peter Copsey – Blackwater SC
Third – ‘Monkey Business’ – Dave Onyons – Marconi SC
With a fifth place in the Krohn Cup Martin Scarth’s ‘Easi Rider’ continues to lead the series, on 14 points, with a 5 to discard, from ‘Aloha’ on 22, with a 9 as her next discard. ‘Moonshadow’ moves up into third place, on 23, with an 8 to discard, followed by ‘Blue Moon’ on 25, with a 9 to go. ‘Sophie’ is in fifth spot, with 30 points, while ‘Caroline’, ‘Dan Dare’, and ‘Geronimo’ are all on 33 points, with 9 and 11s to discard. The final race will be very interesting, and could lead to some major place changes at the top!
In IRC ‘Blue Moon’ is assured of the series win, with ‘Monkey Business’ second, and ‘Evolution’ third.
