Krohn Cup Race Report
A chilly 10.00am start saw 16 boats come to the Marconi Line for the BSC Krohn Cup. Most competitors now looking to discard some of their previous results and move up the series leader board. Although catching Playboys on only 14 points from 5 races, was always going to be a challenge. It was good to see Steorra back in action after a round trip of Britain.
With a light Northerly wind, race officer Barry Foulds set a conservative estuary course of 2 loops from the Bench Head to the North Eagle and Inner Bench head
A close reaching start and 15+ kts of wind saw all the competitors away cleanly and the fleet closely bunched to No12 — the larger boats of Silver Fox, Moonshadow, and Rocket performing well in the fresh breeze.Spinnakers went up at No3 and Silver Fox continued to pull away from the fleet down to No2, closely chased by Aloha.
The beat to No1 was a real tactical challenge with significant wind oscillations and a fast running ebb tide. More experienced crews managed to fetch No1, Playboys making up several places.
The run to the Bench Head was probably the deciding part of the race for many boats. Winds dropping to 4kts and the fleet starting to bunch up with Poohsticks, Evolution and Soprano making gains.
A loop out to the North Eagle and most of the fleet rounded before the tide gate closed
The Inner Bench Head loop saw winds freshening and moving to the North East. Playboys and Caroline flew spinnakers back to the Bench head but struggled to make significant gains
The home leg via No10, 6, 2 and 1, was all about being in the right part of the river and reading the windshifts — Aloha showing strong tactical skills to stay in touch with Silver Fox
Rocket made strong gains on the north shore but retired after missing No2 which was around half a mile east of its charted position
The final drag up to the Marconi line was a wonderful fetch up the Blackwater in late afternoon sunshine
Another tight race of the season with only 37 minutes separating the whole fleet on corrected time. Congratulations to Aloha, Poohsticks and Silver Fox on their best performances of the season
