Paget Cup Race Report
A 10.30 start saw 15 boats come to the Osea Line for the MLSC Paget Cup. For 7 competitors this was to be 5 races completed.
With only 9 points in the series so far, Playboys was looking for a top 6 finish to consolidate their series position
Caroline, was also back in action after a round trip of Britain
With unpredictable wind conditions, race officer Malcolm Holland set a conservative estuary course of 2 loops to the Inner Bench Head
A down wind start and 15+ kts of wind saw all the competitors away cleanly, spinnakers flying
A strong North Westerly had most reaching to No1 with Aloha and Caroline the early leaders. Caroline seeming to get a significant tide effect on the Bradwell shore. Moon Shadow chasing hard with her asymetrric
The middle of the fleet had the longer boats of Rocket, Soprano, Silver Fox, Blue Moon and the 25.7s closely matched.
The first fetch to the Inner Bench saw this group closely locked in battle. Inner Bench Head to Bar had most competitors flying spinnakers with the exception of Silver Fox.
The second loop out to the Inner Bench saw the wind now gusting to 25kts and many were more hesitant to carry their spinnakers to NWK. Soprano took a brave pill and made good gains
Further down the fleet Moondance and Carolanti were pulling in reefs
On the beat home, Blue Moon decided to pull a sail change to a smaller genoa, which in the end, probably cost her significant time as the wind eased into the Blackwater
Rocket and Soprano swapped places a couple of times and finally overhauled Dan Dare
Caroline made significant gains in the flat water by the Bradwell Shore
In the end, this was a day for the bigger boats and those skilled enough to fly spinnakers on the short No2 and No12 cross tide legs on the way home.
This was the tightest race of the season with only 27 minutes separating the whole fleet on corrected time. Caroline finished only 36 seconds ahead of Rocket on corrected time. If only……!
