2019 Stone Bowl

Stone Bowl Race Report

16 boats came to the Stone Line for the Stone Cruiser Bowl; the third race in the 2019 BJRC series. Sophie was making her first appearance of the season. Unfortunately, even before the gun, race organiser Ken Rolland was forced to retire with a broken rudder on Carolanti.

With only 2 hours to low tide, Ken had set a fast course out to the Bench head via No 1. McGregor III was caught out by the strong tide and found herself OCS at the start and forced into a slow reach back, losing several minutes

A promising southerly force 2 at the start, quickly fell away. Most competitors struggled with sagging spinnakers, and drifted with the tide towards No1 for over an hour

With a rapidly approaching tide gate, the estuary course was now abandoned in favour of rounding No 10 before heading home.

Blue Moon and Aloha were the first to report they had found a freshening breeze to No 10, and were soon to be seen with spinnakers up heading home, having avoided the worst of the tide gate.

Slowly the wind filled in, and one by one the rest of the fleet tacked up the Mersea shore to stay out of the tide before crossing to No 10

Although now an hour behind the leaders, the chasing group were very closely bunched with the lighter boats of Playboys, Evolution, Dan Dare and Sundance doing well on handicap in the light winds against the now flooding tide.

With the wind now filling strongly from the southwest, the field continued to bunch up as the early leaders were caught in very changeable conditions towards the finish

Steorra crew were still getting to grips with the new boat and were seen flying their spinnaker from the mast head!

A solid 20kts or more saw strong finishes from the back of the fleet including Poohstick and Soprano.

Despite variable winds and a strong tide gate, it was once again some very close racing with only 35 minutes separating the whole fleet on correct time

Thanks to Ken as race officer and to Wendy with some very good clear race management on the radio
